Epilogue. In the rocks laid down just above the extinction layer in Montana — within roughly a hundred thousand years of the impact — appear the teeth and ankle bones of Purgatorius, a mammal no bigger than a rat that ate fruit and insects and, its ankle joints show, climbed trees. It is the earliest known relative of the primates. Sixty-six million years later, one branch of that family would build a museum, and read this card.
